Female Sterilization in Thailand: A Journey

Sterilization Stories starts with a Filipina woman’s journey to female sterilization in Thailand.

This blog aims to help women and anyone with female reproductive organs seek sterilization, a permanent method of birth control, abroad when they are unable to do so in their own countries. Here, you can find information about medical tourism for sterilization in Thailand based on my experience. I will also add information from other countries to compare alternatives to Thailand.

Here in Sterilization Stories, bodily autonomy and healthcare are respected with utmost importance.

Women with children or childfree can seek sterilization for any reason. Unfortunately, women can still face obstacles with obtaining a tubal ligation or bilateral salpingectomy. This is the reality, especially in a conservative country like the Philippines, where religious beliefs, particularly Roman Catholicism, still determine cultural values and the legal system.

Getting rejected for female sterilization can be disappointing.

For those who still wish for sterilization, the only recourse is medical tourism.

From the Philippines, Thailand is one of the nearest countries for female sterilization. Female sterilization by tubal ligation or bilateral salpingectomy is legal in Thailand. No official laws about minimum age, number of children, or spousal consent exist. From Manila, Thailand’s capital, Bangkok is less than 4 hours away by plane. Thailand is also a well-known destination for medical tourism- expect 5-star hotel-like hospitals costing a fraction of what you would pay in the United States or Europe. From anecdotal experiences, Malaysia, India, and Turkey are Thailand’s closest alternatives in terms of cost and accessibility.

Sterilization is not for anyone who still has doubts about wanting children in the future. It is also not for anyone uncomfortable making a permanent -irreversible- decision on their bodies. Long-term, reversible contraceptives such as IUDs and implants are available.

Should you decide to embark on this journey to sterilization, keep reading this blog. I hope my experience and tips will be able to guide you through getting sterilized in Thailand.

Good luck and I wish the best in your journey!
